In this talk, Adolfo Carvalho, a postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, guides us through one of the universe’s most remarkable construction projects: the 5-billion-year process that transformed a cloud of interstellar dust into our solar system. The focus of his tour will be the physical processes that assembled our planets and how they can also explain the 1000s of extrasolar planetary systems we’ve discovered in the past 30 years. He will share highlights of his transformational experience as a Keck Visiting Scholar and update us on his current trajectory.

Adolfo Carvalho is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, working with Dr. Sean Andrews. Adolfo recently obtained his Astrophysics PhD at Caltech, where I worked with Professor Lynne Hillenbrand on outbursting Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) and Professor Laura Perez at Universidad de Chile, studying protoplanetary disks with ALMA. Adolfo is generally interested in how the disks in which planets form impact their formation.
