T. Ilihia Gionson

Chief Public Affairs Officer

The unifying thread of T. Ilihia Gionson’s work is bringing people together through the stories and values we all share. He has over a decade of experience in developing and executing public affairs for private organizations and government entities at the federal, state, and county levels. His experience spans a variety of industries where he served clients in government and politics, renewable energy, affordable housing, hospitality, and the creative industries. He has also worked as a writer and producer with local and statewide outlets in both English and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.

As Public Affairs Officer for the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) on Oʻahu, Ilihia stewarded the realignment of Hawaiʻi’s largest industry with the needs of the community by initiating a successful regenerative model of tourism. His work with HTA as a cultural connector ensured value alignment between the visitor industry and the Hawaiian community, committing the industry to a more sustainable future.

In 2025, Ilihia returned to the Hawaiʻi Island community that raised him, taking on the role of Chief Public Affairs Officer at the W. M. Keck Observatory where he uses his deeply rooted sense of service and stewardship to foster collaboration, strengthen community relations, and respectfully move forward together in mutual stewardship of Maunakea. Ilihia’s role is focused on ensuring the Observatory’s work is rooted in respect for place, culture and people.
