Keck Week Video #9: Nobel Worthy: The Accelerating Expansion of the Universe

Astronomer Alex Filippenko has been recognized nationally as a science educator. The recipient of the top teaching awards at UC Berkeley, he has been voted by students the “Best Professor” on campus a record 9 times.  

This video, recorded at the Keck Science Meeting in Hawaii this past March, features Dr. Filippenko talking about Keck Observatory’s role in revealing the accelerating expansion of the Universe.

This discovery, currently theorized as being propelled by a new fundamental force described as “dark energy,” was deemed the “Top Breakthrough of 1998” and was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011.
